Rock the Pool, 2023

Rock the Pool is inspired by starfish and other wondrous creatures found in tide pools and rock pools by the seaside.

Starfish are a common element in my works as I explore the beauty of nature and contradiction. The delicate balance of nature serves great contradiction and the starfish is one of those prime examples. Starfish can live harmoniously on the sea floor in coral reefs but when left unchecked, with a lack of predator, the balance shifts and starfish become not only the savage predator but an invasive species which devours and decimates coral reef species.

The starfish which are embroidered and beaded sit in resin and slightly protrude giving the effect of them poking out through the surface of the water much like you might see when exploring rock pools.

This piece has a multitude of layers from alcohol ink, embroidery, beading which is all set in resin in a wooden cradle. Size of piece measures 32cm x 32cm x 2cm / 12.5 x 12.5 x 0.7 inches and has a sawtooth attachment on the back for hanging.
